This past summer, we finally welcomed a girl from East Java back to her home island from a safe house on another island after months of planning and preparations. She entered the Grace House program and began her online high school classes. She brings energy, thoughtfulness and a new perspective to our daily life. She has been a close friend to the other resident of Grace House and is a joy in the home.
Both residents did very well on their year-end exams and advanced past junior high into high school. One chose a vocational track program she is interested in, and the other chose the social sciences track of formal high school.
A new surge of Covid hit the area Grace House is located in especially hard. The home went back under lockdown immediately after having opened up. Some staff and one of the girls became sick, but recovered well. By following quarantine protocol, the staff was able to halt the advance of the virus. They welcomed the opportunity to receive the vaccines when they arrived, and the girls are set to receive their vaccines shortly.
The limitations of a Covid-bound world make it challenging to remain positive for everyone, including for bright teenagers who want to see their family and friends. Staff continue to minister to and consider how to best come alongside these precious girls as they navigate these realities.
