An important distraction

By Jane Best | Project leader

With the ongoing attacks in the south of Lebanon, we were concerned about sending funds to this progam due to the security risk. We talked with our partners on the ground and decided to go ahead.

The compounded economic and security crises have had a devastating impact on Lebanon’s education sector. Schools in affected and high-risk areas have been forced to close or switch to remote learning, while many displaced children have lost access to schooling altogether.

This kindergarten was closed for a while early in the year with classes continuing online. It was decided that it was important to meet the children in person to provide a distraction from the dangers around them. Interruption to education is placing an entire generation at risk of long-term learning loss and emotional distress, so classes resumed in March.

This allowed the teachers to interact with the students better and gives everyone a greater sense of purpose.

Families in Wadi Zayne consist mainly of Palestinian Refugees from Lebanon, Palestinian Refugees from Syria and Syrian refugees. These populations have already faced poor infrastructure, limited job opportunities, and legal restrictions preventing access to formal employment.

Through the kindergarten teachers reaching out to parents and family members, the community can share experiences, learn they are not alone and support each other.

According to UNICEF and MEHE (2025), more than 450,000 children in Lebanon are now out of school. Families facing extreme poverty are prioritizing food and shelter over education. Teachers also face displacement, loss of income, and limited access to resources, which further disrupts the learning process.

This program addresses these issues in Wadi Zayne. We are pleased we made the decision to send funds.

Thanks for your continued support ensuring we can do this.
