2020 was a year like no other. Back in October, Vietnam — already amid a global pandemic — also had to contend with Typhoon Molave. As the tropical storm reached central Vietnam, OneSky’s Early Learning Center (ELC) in Da Nang went to work providing shelter for 260 people; mostly factory workers and their families
Reports suggested that between half a million and one million people had already been evacuated as Molave hit central Vietnam. It was the strongest tropical storm to batter the country in 20 years.
OneSky staff worked hard to reinforce the building ahead of the storm while cooperating with police and government officials to meet their requirements.
Families expressed gratitude and relief to have a haven for the night, with food also being provided thanks to donations of eggs, rice, and noodles. Factories closed and people were told not to travel.
Last year, Vietnam was hit by the most intense series of tropical storms in decades, Molave being the ninth since the start of the year. Millions of people were at risk of losing their homes and livelihoods with weeks of rain and flooding that at that time had claimed the lives of over 100 people.
But nowhere in Vietnam had suffered more than its central region.
And, Da Nang only fully re-opened a month prior to the storm after having been at the center of Vietnam’s second wave of Covid-19. During that time, OneSky teachers and colleagues also worked hard to serve their local community.
