News from our reforesting project in Nigeria

By Festus Onogholo | Project Manager

News letter for our GlobalGiving partners November, 2019

We must protect the forest for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forest for those who can speak

for themselves such as the birds, fish, animals and Trees. We must protect the forest to save our world from Climate change. Festus Onogholo PhD

Yes- we choose to support Nature- would you rather partner with us...

This life is ours. Take the power to choose what you love to do and do it for posterity. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. In the Trees for Peace Project- we have chosen the power to support and sustain our forest, our environment for a safe future for us, our children and unborn. In addition to the above we provide job for the less privilege in the rural area. We are deeply grateful, for chosen to partner with us and to bring back our forest. With your support, we are doing our best to pay workers that worked in the forest plantation so that they can send their children to school. According to the FAO 2018, Nigeria has the world's highest deforestation rate of primary forests and has lost more than half of it’s in the last five years. Presently we are bringing back some lost primary forest. . Pictures below, A shows part a graded forest in 2013 and B shows present state of the forest in 2019. More indigenous trees were planted in 2019 and by this act we have further reduced the total areas currently under forest degradation. Without your support, this can’t be done.

Edo State Government donated a project vehicle to the One Million Trees for Peace Project

Sequel to the request of the President, Bernadette Strebel and Mr. Jurg Kelller, Treasurer ABSWP-CH on the 24th October 2018, in Government House, Nigeria, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Gov. Godwin Obaseki made a donation of a Toyota

Hilux Van for our forest regeneration activities . While handling the project vehicle to the Project Manager, Dr Festus Onogholo, the Director of Administration and Supply representing the Governor said the state government is grateful for our regeneration efforts which is first in the South -south Nigeria and also commend our partners for working to sustain the project. He also spoke to Mr. Elmar Grief during the handling over ceremony of the vehicle.

Every creature including Tree needs a friend.

“You know what we do to support our environment. We don’t only plant trees; we have gone a step further by making these planted trees our friend because every creature needs friends. Our Board members in Association Bernadette Strebel World Peace (ABSWP) –Switzerland spend great time for the project. Workers on the field spent lots of time in caring, loving and maintaining the plantedtrees andthese times are never wasted. In 2019, over15,000 trees planted and 70,000 trees planted in 2018, were ring- weeded before general weeding. Though, not easy the workers were happy in doing this. ABSWP-CH board members are doing lots and the workers on the field are never relenting- all working to create an atmosphere of friendship with the trees and by extension our environment.. One of the things that can support in bringing back our forest is creating an atmosphere of true friendship. When this is done, trees will be respected, will never be cut indiscriminately, will be protected from wild fire etc wouldyou rather partner with us...

One Million Trees for Peace project, improving lives in the rural Area.

Since the onset of this project living standard and joy of some rural dwellers have really improved. The local people are happy with themselves. This has created a peaceful existence within the locals, Christian, Muslim and non-religious persons. Thanks to our donors and Board members of ABSWP –EU that have made this possible. We continue to solicit for your support as Great things like Trees takes time to Grow.

Other operation for the year and early 2020.

Finally we have no words to express our gratitude to our partners in Global Giving for all their support. Though we own workers some unpaid salaries, we thank you for your donation in the past. We have lots of forest operation to do in December 2019 and early January/February 2020. Part of the 15000 forest seedlings planted in 2019 have not been paid, The heavy rainfalls have resulted in growth of weeds and we own to our donors to protect the 2018 and 2019 planted trees. We are also expected to do fire-part around the plantation to protect the trees against bush fire which is a regular occurrence in Africa. For this and others we need your much needed donation to enable us do all the above. We love to show more support for the newly planted trees by protecting them from weeds so that they might be eating along with grass by cattle which is s major problem in Nigeria.
