Celebrating #GivingTuesday with Helmets for Kids

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we begin the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to say “thank you.” It is with your support that we are able to work towards safe roads for all. This year, we are part of a call to action to celebrate a day dedicated to charitable giving. On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, we will join the global movement #GivingTuesday by encouraging our supporters to give a helmet to a child in Vietnam. Here are some updates on what we've been able to do with your support:

Helmets for Kids partner Johnson & Johnson wins international award for work on global road safety
28 September, 2017- Birmingham, U.K.

Congratulations to our partner Johnson & Johnson for winning the BRAKE Fleet Safety Award in the category of "Global Road Safety." This category awards the organization that has worked hardest to improve road safety for all road users in communities around the world, and has road safety at the heart of its corporate social responsibility ethos. The award acknowledged the Helmets for Kids program, a partnership between Johnson & Johnson and AIP Foundation.

Helmets for Kids provides school children and teachers with quality helmets and road safety education. Over the past five years, Johnson & Johnson has supported the program in Vietnam and has donated more than 45,000 helmets to vulnerable road users.

CEO attends road safety conference to present on child helmet access, pedestrian safety
10-12 October, 2017- Perth, Australia

AIP Foundation CEO Mirjam Sidik joined fellow road safety advocates at the 2017 Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC2017), the largest road safety-dedicated conference in the Southern Hemisphere. At the conference, Sidik presented on our contributions to Vietnam’s National Child Helmet Action Plan, which aims to increase helmet use among child motorcycle passengers. She also discussed Street Wise, our pedestrian and helmet safety program supported by Chevron in Thailand. On the final day of ARSC2017, Sidik took part in a symposium on the challenges of implementing and sustaining road safety initiatives in low- and middle-income countries.

ARSC2017 brought together over 500 delegates from around the world, including researchers, practitioners, policymakers, educators, students, as well as traffic management and vehicle safety representatives. The theme for this year’s conference was “Expanding our horizons”, and focused on a range of issue areas identified in the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety such as road safety management, infrastructure, safe vehicles, user behavior, and post-crash care.

1,500 high-quality helmets donated to primary school near busy Vietnamese national highway
23 October, 2017 – Yen Bai Province, Vietnam

Helmets for Kids also expanded its road safety education efforts to Yen Bai Province and donated 1,500 high-quality helmets to the school community. The program, which is supported by Johnson & Johnson, celebrated the launch of its sixth year with a ceremony at Au Lau Primary School in Yen Bai Province that was attended by over 400 students, teachers, and staff. All six of the new program schools in Yen Bai Province are located in high-risk and traffic dense areas along National Highways no. 37 and 32C. Pre-implementation surveys revealed that the average student helmet-use rate at these schools is only 31% and the majority of helmets are substandard.

Helmets for Kids will also continue its programming in Gia Lai and Quang Nam Provinces, providing 20 primary schools in the three provinces with 5,100 quality helmets and road safety education throughout the current school year. In addition to donating helmets, the program provides students with education and activities, such as traffic simulations and road awareness training. Teacher trainings occurred earlier this year in all three provinces of the program.

Australian university students donate 35 helmets for Vietnamese children

As the summer holiday draws to a close, AIP Foundation is preparing for another exciting school year of education and awareness programs throughout Vietnam. Read below to learn about some interesting advancements from the past few months, including a visit to the Protec helmet manufacturing factory in Hanoi and a look back at the 2016-2017 Helmets for Kids program.

Local stakeholders gather for helmet program year-end review meeting
28 June, 2017 - Dong Nai Province

Fifty-seven stakeholders gathered in Dong Nai Province to discuss and reflect on the progress made through the Helmets for Kids program over the previous school year. Representatives from the local Department of Education and Training, primary schools, and others joined AIP Foundation and the local media during the meeting. As part of the school-based helmet safety education and awareness program, select schools received subsidized helmets, hosted extracurricular activities, and implemented an educational curriculum.

Australian university students donate 35 helmets for Vietnamese children, visit Protec helmet factory
5 July, 2017- Hanoi

Students from the University of Adelaide in Australia donated 35 children’s helmets to AIP Foundation after a visit to the Protec factory in Hanoi. During the tour, the students learned about the history and mission of AIP Foundation, as well as current road safety challenges in low- and middle-income countries. The students also observed how to construct a helmet and the process for testing helmet quality in the on-site lab.

Dinh Kim Phuong, the nonprofit’s National Program Manager for the country, thanked the University of Adelaide students for their donation, which she said will “help protect Vietnamese children and their future.” The visit to the Protec factory was organized by AIP Foundation and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam.

In 2001, AIP Foundation's President and Founder, Greig Craft, founded Protec and began producing the world’s first "tropical" motorcycle helmet. Since its inception, the factory has produced nearly 6.5 million helmets.

50 university students share road safety experiences through focus group
25 August, 2017- Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

AIP Foundation conducted focus group discussions with 50 students at five universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to identify the main causes of road crashes for young people. The discussion aimed to identify the gaps in students’ knowledge of crash prevention strategies, and how best to share road safety information with university students for our new Safety Delivered program. The participants in the focus group shared their road experiences as well as observations of common mistakes made by other road users. The university students also contributed innovative ideas to help inform program design, including engaging celebrities in Safety Delivered program activities in order to attract students and increase the program’s effectiveness. We will develop an educational toolkit on relevant road safety topics based on the results of the group discussions. Safety Delivered is a new program being implemented in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar with support from The UPS Foundation.

Thousands from Vietnamese port community celebrate international road safety week

We recently celebrated the 4th UN Global Road Safety Week in Vietnam with thousands of community members who live near a major industrial port. We also hosted school-based activities with primary school students to reinforce important helmet safety lessons. Read on to learn more about these exciting initiatives.

Project photo selected as semi-finalist in GlobalGiving's annual photo contest

AIP Foundation’s photo was selected as a semi-finalist in GlobalGiving’s annual photo contest. Our submitted photo was captured during a helmet safety knowledge exchange between truck drivers and primary school students in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam, in December 2016. The event was held as part of our Lifting Safety program, a partnership with APM Terminals.

Thousands from industrial port community celebrate 4th UN Global Road Safety Week

15 May, 2017 - Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province

Truck drivers, local authorities, and transportation professionals shared their safe driving skills knowledge with more than 3,000 members of the Cai Mep port community in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam, at the “Get Home Safe” festival. The event was hosted as part of the Lifting Safety program and in commemoration of the 4th UN Global Road Safety Week, which ran worldwide from 8-14 May, 2017. Families participated in engaging road safety games and activiti. They also watched music and comedy performances during the community event. In December 2016, truck drivers participating in the program taught students at a nearby school about the importance of helmet safety, as well as how to properly wear their new helmets.

Extracurricular activities reinforce 600 students’ helmet use knowledge, preliminary data shows increase in safe road behaviors

14 March, 2017 – Ho Chi Minh City

Engaging extracurricular activities reinforced 600 students’ helmet safety knowledge at Ap Dinh Primary School in Hoc Mon District, one of the six schools involved in Abbott’s Helmets for Families program. Students’ behaviors have shifted during the course of the 2016-2017 program, with the average helmet wearing rates across all four schools in the district reaching 81%, compared to just 31% at baseline. Hoc Mon District is a low-income, agricultural area of Ho Chi Minh City.

Senior representatives from Abbott visiting from the pharmaceutical company’s U.S. headquarters volunteered during the extracurricular activities. During the event, students participated in a Ms. and Mr. Helmet Safety competition, which included dance performances, helmet wearing demonstrations, and tests of their road safety knowledge. They also played creative games that taught them about the differences between non-standard and standard helmets, the importance of wearing helmets, and how to wear their helmets correctly.

In the 2016-2017 school year, the program has provided 5,600 high quality helmets to students, teachers, and parents through donations and subsidies. The program serves four schools in Ho Chi Minh City’s Hoc Mon District and two in Hanoi. Since its launch in 2013, Helmets for Families has served beneficiaries at 15 schools in Vietnam, and has provided more than 30,000 quality helmets through donations and subsidized exchanges.
