"Fly by Light, is a a second home to me. It's a place where I can be free, and not feel judged. Its hard sometimes at school and at home to be myself, but here, I am free."
This is Nardia. She has been with our program since her freshman year in high school, and now as a junior, she is one of the youth leaders of the entire program. For three years we have watched her flourish from a shy young teenager, to a strong and bold young woman. She is an accomplished musician, songwriter, and actress, and in this picture she is leading an audience through her own original piece titled, "In this Skin", a song about the hardships she faces as a young black teen in D.C. She is a prime example of the power of music and restorative justice at work.
Through Fly by Light, we are creating silos of peace throughout Washington D.C. Where students can learn to not only be themselves, but appreciate themselves. We work with young people to help them find their light, and in turn shine it for others.
Since launching our Global Giving campaign, we have laid the ground work to start another chapter site throughout the city. We are currently in 5 schools and aiding approximately 80 students. But with your support we can take our work to the next level and directly impact the lives of 100 students, and lay the foundation for visualizing a new generation of world changers.
Nardia and students just like her, inspire us to be our best and to be brave everyday, and we hope that she inspires you too.
