Between January and March 2021 we have undergone a strategic review which has involved engagement with different levels of the health system, volunteers, Community Health Workers (CHWs), partners, funders, and external consultants to review On Call Africa’s approach, and how resources and strengths could be best utilised to support the development of strong and effective rural health systems in Zambia.
This review has led to the development of a pilot project, designed in partnership with Ministry of Health, to work towards our shared objective of developing a replicable model service package to strengthen rural health systems. By pivoting our approach to focus our efforts higher up the health system ladder, through rural health facilities, we aim to reach more people at lower cost than we have previously. The image below illustrates a draft model that we will review and refine through this pilot phase, in collaboration with health facility staff, our skilled volunteers, and partners.
Through the pilot, we will be partnering with 3 rural health facilities; Chalimongela Health Post, Kanyanga Health Post and Chinkozya Health Post, placing 2 volunteer Doctors in each facility. Our volunteer Doctors will: carry out assessments; develop quality improvement plans that can be taken forward by ourselves, MOH and partners; deliver training and evaluate impact.
On Call Africa will work with WaterAid, AMP Health, VeroPower, D.Tree, Medic Mobile, World Bicycle Relief, and others to support the delivery of the agreed plans, alongside Ministry of Health. The intention is to include projects such as WASH, solar power, transport, and digital health systems, alongside training of staff, health workers and community based volunteers, to take a holistic approach to improving access to quality healthcare in rural areas. This pilot has the support of Ministry of Health, and buy in from identified partners. It is intended that this assessment and development stage of the pilot will feed into a pilot at up to 30 rural health facilities.
Thank you for supporting us on our journey.
