Our team's scheduled trip to Haiti on December 9th has been rescheduled for the last week in January. We are working on finding appropriate lodging and accomodations for our team on a permanent basis in Arcahaie as they work on the project. We are planning for the first group of volunteers from various U.S. Universities to be in Haiti by summer 2011.
The last week of January, the Miami Chapter of Architecture for Humanity is sending the design team volunteers to visit the site. While there, they will be able to not only understand the grounds where the environmental center will be built, but they will also understand the culture and the way of living of those who will be using the center - the people of Arcahaie.
The drawings for the center at this point are entering the "design development" phase. Which means that the basic layout and general concept have been developed, and now more details, such as sanitation, sewage, security, water catchment systems, etc start to be incorporated into the design. A soil test and hydrological survey are also being facilitated in this phase and should be complete within the next 2-3 weeks.
In the mean time because of the urgency of what is happening in Haiti. In Arcahaie, Haiti which is the location for our specific project, we are working with our various partners on the ground, providing seedlings such as avocado, as well as vegetable seed. Our project in the future will include a seed bank and nursery which will be available not only to our partners in Arcahaie, but to all.
