Now that the design and plan for our project has been completed. Our team has been currently working and researching the best material to use for the construction of the building. We have decided to use for the most part bamboo, mostly Guadua. The other issue is security and we need to up the fence in phase one. The team finally decided on concrete and chain link with a 10 ft. height, weaving bamboo through chain link as a natural screen.
The Environmental Center & Volunteer Village will be built on 5 acres. One Operation Green Leaves' long term goal's for this project is to reforest the denuded mountain of Arcahaie, (with the collaboration of other organizations & agencies), it is important to provide alternative solutions to the deforestation problem there. Sustainable Economic Development is key. The site is 30 acres. Our team decided to grow a few species of bamboo on the site to provide economic opportunities to the commune of Arcahaie. These are some of the uses the bamboo: cooking, charcoal alternative, vinegar extracted from bamboo, nets for fishing, chicken coops, scaffolding, furniture and much more.
We are posting a few pictures of two of team members working on the project on the property, Architect Jennifer Siquiera, Architect for Humanity, Miami Chapter and Reness Joachin, Engineer & Architect.
