As of April 16th, 2024, 502,968 trees have been planted for the 2023-2024 planting season. Amongst the 457 distributions have been those to schools, farmers, cooperations, and more. Planting 6,573 trees in schools and partnering with 3,342 farmers has allowed for a vast spread of distribution, benefiting people of all ages. Further, in supplying fruit and nut trees native to Morocco we combat rapidly advancing environmental degradation, promoting biodiversity that not only helps farmers but strengthens food systems.
Trees and carbon may seem like an unlikely pair, but they have a strong relationship that can lead to significant benefits for the environment and local communities. On March 19, 2024, the High Atlas Foundation (HAF) organized a workshop in Timichi village, Setti Fadma municipality, to educate local farmers about the importance of sustainable agriculture, tree planting, and carbon offsetting projects. The workshop aims to educate farmers about the social, economic and environmental benefits of tree planting; provide guidance on appropriate techniques for planting, nurturing, and harvesting trees; and explain carbon offsetting projects and the variety of options available for farmers.
One of the participants of the recent workshop had this to say:
‘’I have benefited greatly from this workshop. It provided us with essential information on planting and caring for trees, especially how important it is to irrigate them properly for maximum development and productivity. It also exposed us to the idea of the carbon project, which is a new concept that we hope to utilize in the future. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the High Atlas Foundation and its partners for their work and initiatives in our village through several projects, the most important of which is tree planting’’.
- Allal, a Farmer from Timichi village, March 19 2024
To further strengthen farmers' skills and increase project outcomes, HAF will organize more workshops with practical training in the villages of Setti Fadma municipality. The expanded training will cover topics such as site preparation, best practices for planting trees, monitoring and maintenance requirements, and caring for farms. Regular follow-up visits will ensure farmers receive the necessary support for their tree planting and carbon projects.
Farmers in Timichi village expressed their gratitude for the workshop, acknowledging the valuable knowledge and skills they gained. They are eager to apply these lessons to enhance agricultural sustainability, increase their incomes, and contribute to carbon offset projects.
