Oceans of Opportunity for 20 Vulnerable Youngsters

This summer, thanks to your support, 20 vulnerable young people will have the chance to make new friends, work as part of a team, push themselves to try new things. They will become more resilient and build valuable life-skills to help them have a more positive future. They will definitely get wet and may possibly never be the same again....

Coastal Camp is the second residential camp in the Youth Adventure Trust's life-changing adventure programme. It is not always plain sailing for our young people. Trying new activities and learning new skills with new people, combined with deep water can be challenging. 

Some of those challenges involve the activities themselves such as, ‘jumping in the sea’, ‘Standing up in the kayak,’ ‘Raft building’, Being in a sail boat on my own’. Some of those challenges are less tangible such as; ‘Facing my fears’, ‘Getting to know everyone’, 'When I couldn’t get to sleep’, 'Making myself heard’, ‘Making friends’.

However, in the words of one of our volunteers, through their experiences on Coastal Camp our young people gain; ‘A great sense of achievement from pushing themselves and their boundaries. They all have something to be proud of. Hopefully this will give them the confidence to push themselves and attempt activities/tasks that they didn’t initially think themselves capable of tackling.’

And in the words of one of our young people,; 'I learnt that I can actually talk to new people and with a bit of motivation I can and will try anything someone throws at me'.
