Summary

This public health project will sterilize, vaccinate, and treat 15,000 stray and feral animals across rural Oaxaca, reducing animal cruelty, overpopulation, zoonotic disease, parasite transmission, and animal attacks. It includes youth education programs to foster early empathy, public workshops on animal care and disease prevention, and hands-on surgical training for disadvantaged veterinary students and practicing professionals-building community health capacity and improving animal welfare.

Challenge

There are an estimated 40 million strays in Mexico - 70% live on the streets. Oaxaca faces a severe public health crisis driven by millions of stray and feral animals, extreme poverty, and lack of accessible veterinary care. Families are routinely exposed to harmful viruses, parasites, and attacks by aggressive animals. Approximately 25% of the population contracts intestinal parasites each year, spread largely by the feces of free-roaming animals.

Solution

We will sterilize, vaccinate, treat, and permanently identify 15,000+ stray and feral animals each year in Oaxaca's most underserved regions. Community workshops will reduce zoonotic disease and improve public health knowledge. Youth education programs will foster empathy and humane care in children. Hands-on surgical training for Mexican veterinary students will build local capacity and strengthen job readiness. Every component is designed to end the cycle of disease and suffering-permanently.

Long-Term Impact

This project will directly improve household and regional health by reducing zoonotic disease, parasite transmission, and aggressive stray encounters. It will combat animal cruelty and neglect through youth education programs and public information workshops. By training veterinary students and graduates in advanced surgical technique and effective field medicine, we build lasting clinical capacity-creating systemic, self-sustaining change for animals, people, and communities.
