Summary

Oaken Acres admits 2,000 wild patients annually. About 20% of those patients require xrays; another 15% would benefit greatly from them. While our local veterinarians can do radiographs on our patients, we can't always get an appointment in a timely manner or they may not be comfortable handling our adult patients. Successful rehabilitation relies on having xrays done asap. Our own xray machine will be a tremendous aid. It avoids stress on the patient, the staff, and saves time and money.

Challenge

Immediate diagnosis is critical to our patients' survival. Fractured bones, lead pellets, internal injuries, and spinal trauma all need expert, rapid treatment to alleviate pain and increase the odds of successful rehabilitation. Most of these conditions require radiographs to determine if treatment is recommended and release is possible. A significant percentage - 35% - of our 2,000 annual patients benefit from xrays. This can't always happen in a timely manner without an onsite x-ray machine.

Solution

With an onsite digital x-ray machine, we can eliminate these challenges: ~ Not able to get a same-day appointment with a local vet ~ Needing outside help with a fractious patient that local vets do not want to handle ~ Patient stress with a 3-hour roundtrip visit to a wildlife center with vet on staff ~ Delayed treatment - An onsite x-ray unit will alleviate suffering of the patient by enabling us to determine if euthanasia is the kindest option, saving money and travel time for the staff.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that 700+ of our 2.000 patients each year would benefit from radiographs, The ability to diagnose and treat in an almost immediate time frame means we can assure our thousands of rescuers that we are doing everything that an independent wildlife rehabilitation center can possibly do for "their" rescued wild animal. Oaken Acres has a reputation for going above and beyond for its patients. This will further prove that our staff is providing the best care possible.
