The health and nutrition project in Los Altos, Chiapas is one of the most inspiring and sucessful project in all of the seven regions where Amextra collaborates in Mexico. One of the elements that makes this project so strong is the emphasis on strengthening the social fabric of the community. In addition to the health and nutrition, education, environmental conservation, an income generation projects, specefic activities are also carried out with the goal of children, parents, neighbors and peers spending time together and getting to know each other. As when women talk and laugh while watering plant in the greenhouse in Xulumo, and neighbors work together to build wood-saving stoves, events like the one for International Children´s Day and other Mexican and International holidays bring people together.
In this report we want to share with you highlights from three of the projects in the health and nutrition area of the project in Los Altos, Chiapas during the last two months:
Water Biofilter
In the community of Canech in Chalchihuitán, Chiapas, a home water biofilter was built with materials from the region such as gravel, sand and wood to create charcoal. This filter provides access to clean water for families and reduces the risk of infectious diseases due to water contamination. When children grow up with clean water, they can grow stronger and healthier and reduce both short and long term health consequences.
Weight and height monitoring in children.
Within the health and nutrition program, constant monitoring was carried out with 46 children under six years of age in the Altos and Ocosingo regions of Chiapas (29 in Los Altos and 17 in Ocosingo). Malnutrition was able to be diagnosed through weight, height and hemoglobin measurements.
International Children's Day
For the celebration of International Children´s Day on April 30th, 70 children, 4 men and 31 women participated in the celebration in the communities of Xulumo, Santa Cruz, Canech, Namtic and Tzacucum. The fun and participative activities involved people of all ages. In addition, thanks to the support of people who joined in our collection of toys, it was possible to give every child a toy. The goal of the event was to share the joy among the attendees and also promote the rights of children. We call this event a definite success!
Thank you for taking time to read this report from Los Altos, Chiapas. We´re proud to share our advances with you and thank you for your donations that make this project possible!
Wishing you the best,
Stephanie
