AIDSHOPE had an opportunity to take the kids to a weekend camp in October 2022 for them to be in a different location where they can be kids, enjoying playing without worrying about the burdens of the family. The camp gave the kids an opportunity to dream again as this was shared by one of them while they were hiking.
Mico[Not her real name] said; “ May we stay at the camp forever as its super nice to be here..” Mico’s mother died during the year due to AIDS related diseases, this was the first time she was away from home where she does most of the chores after the death of her mother. It was also encouraging the see her beautiful smile during the camp, she even stopped smiling however we are seeing improvement as well on her health’s side.
Annually AIDSHOPE[7th Year] host a Christmas Lunch for those addicted to drugs and are in prostitution[ with 200 plus attending in 2022]. We invite different stakeholders dealing with substance abuse on the day to encourage the attendees and be available to serve them on this special day. The rate of HIV infection is very high due to what is called BLUETOOTH[ Drawing out blood from one high person with drugs and inject another person with that blood in return getting high as well]. We have seen a number of our brothers and sisters dying in this community.
During the Christmas, we encourage them with gifts for trying to quit drugs, also have them talk to the rehab centres present on the day. Thabo[Not his real name] share: “The best way to support those addicted to drugs is by bringing them closer and listening to their life stories as that will create trust which is something the community is struggle about.”
It was great to have Teen Challenge Girls Centre attending the event, it was a struggle to assist ladies mostly in prostitution with getting them assisted so its great to see have the centre nearby.
