1. Background
The ongoing displacement crisis in parts of Plateau State has left many families, particularly children, vulnerable to malnutrition and poor living conditions. Displaced children in IDP camps face limited access to nutritious food, which is critical for their growth, immunity, and overall well-being. There are 6 IDP camps in Mangu LGA alone, these victims are yet to be resettled to their villages as the attackers have taken possession of their homes and completely destroyed those they did not occupy.
In response, MOLDEV, with support from GlobalGiving, implemented a targeted nutrition intervention aimed at improving the health status of displaced children through the provision of nutrient-dense food packs and essential clothing support.
2. Objective of the Intervention
To provide immediate nutritional support to displaced children
To reduce the risk of malnutrition among vulnerable populations
To improve overall well-being through complementary support (clothing)
To strengthen humanitarian response efforts within the IDP camp
3. Description of the Intervention
The intervention involved the distribution of quick, nutrient-dense food packs specifically designed to support the dietary needs of displaced children.
Key Components:
Distribution of fortified, ready-to-use food packs
Provision of clothing to support dignity and protection
On-site engagement with caregivers and beneficiaries
The food packs were carefully packaged for hygiene, portability, and ease of use, ensuring that even in constrained camp conditions, beneficiaries could access adequate nutrition.
4. Beneficiaries
Primary: Displaced children residing in the Mangu IDP Camp from 6 months to 10 years
Secondary: Caregivers and vulnerable households within the camp.
Total number of beneficiaries (children) – 480
5. Implementation Approach
Needs assessment conducted within the camp was carried out in 2024 June, MOLDEV then applied with GlobalGiving where it got the support of $65 which this intervention took place
Procurement, processing and packaging of nutrient-dense food items
Coordinated distribution within the camp under the supervision of the camp and local association leaders.
6. Challenges
The nutritional packs were not sufficient to go round the camp not to mention the 5 others
This intervention is important but not sustainable though is provides the nutrition needed at the moment.
The people need alternate source of income capacity building since the known way of farming is not obtainable as a result of the attacks
