Educate and Empower Girls and Women of Acholi

RIVER FUND WOMEN ASSOCIATION – KITGUM

SUBJECT: ACTIVITY REPORT FOR JUNE 2023

DATE: 22^ND JUNE, 2023

Introduction:

The Girls Education sponsorship is a component of Feed, Educate, Empower women and girls of Acoli supported by GlobalGiving. It is implemented by River Fund Family Support Women Association, a CBO located in Kitgum District, Northern Uganda, Uganda. 

River Fund USA provides leadership and support. 

Project Aim:

The project aims to help dropouts of secondary school girls through provision of fees and mentoring. 

Number of Girls under sponsorship:

There are twenty girls; all are in Senior III 2023 and all reported to their various schools.

Payment of School Fees:

All the twenty girls have been fully paid for Second Term 2023. 

School Visit:

• Mentors have already visited the girls in their various schools to encourage them to work harder.
• Gender based violence among the teachers against the girls is no longer there.

Achievement:

• There is no case of teenage pregnancy among the twenty girls.
• No dropout of school.
• The mentors are doing well to the girls.

Challenges:

• Some of the girls are lacking school uniforms.
• Families of the girls engage them in domestic work during school working days which is still a common practice in our society.
• There is general hunger in Kitgum district due to the uncertainty in rainfall in the district.
• Some of the students cover long distance to their schools, hence in the situation of little food and fatigue, their performance is affected.

Recommendations:

• The members will also visit their home and sensitize their family not to overload the girls with a lot of domestic work on school days e.g. digging in the morning, fatching water in far distant water point etc.
• The members should continue telling the dangers of teenage pregnancy.
• Students to be advised to avoid laziness in school and be active for better performance/learning outcomes.
• Students should listen to their teachers.

Conclusion:

Much appreciation to the Executive Director of River Fund USA and GlobalGiving for their Steadfast support to the Girls Child Education of Kitgum, Northern Uganda.

Appreciation is also extended to the Executive and members of River Fund Women Association Kitgum for the commitment which has made work easier for us.
