This project will help 50 SAN households in Oshikunde to adapt land use to reduce the vulnerability of San communities in Oshikunde Constituency of Ohangwena Region of Namibia to the impacts of climate change. This means re-assessing, and where necessary changing the land use, to prevent overgrazing while supporting the local communities in adapting their livelihoods to ensure their survival.
The San people, the oldest population and have faced generations of marginalization inhabitants of southern Africa and eviction under South African apartheid rule prior to independence in 1990. They are one of Namibia's six Indigenous populations. Today, they comprise less than 2% of the national population. The San people survived by hunting antelope by bow and arrow and gathering food. They also moved from place to place, following a nomadic way of life.
The project will proving beyond doubt that this community too can integrate into growing vegetables instead of just surviving from wild fruits that they are competing for with wild animals.
The 1 500 square meters will produce kale, cabbage, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, onions and chili twice a week for the village. The long time marginalized community would be lifting up their livelihood and economic stability.
