Putting their best foot forward at AAWC Sports Day
Aman* had serious health issues and fell sick frequently. Due to this, his attendance to AAWC became irregular. He was weak and had trouble sitting straight. All he did was sleep all day. However, after being provided with proper nutrition, care and a positive environment, his health improved. There was also a positive change in his behavior and approach.
With your kind donation and support, Aman* now learns new things, participates in all activities enthusiastically, studies well and tries not to miss a day!
AAWC had a bright first quarter in the New Year!
Organizational updates

- Mumbai Marathon: AAWC was privileged to be represented by Aria Parikh, Amruda Nair, Shalab Misra and Avanish Kumar at the 2015 Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon in January.
- Festival celebrations: This season AAWC celebrated Makarsankrati (Kite Flying) where the children flew kites and also pasted small kites on a blackboard to make a collage out of it. On Republic Day, the girls made presentations on the famous freedom fighters of India and during Holi they celebrated with colors, dance, food and merriment!
- Capacity Building: Our Outreach Workers attended the MAF Meeting regarding the stock out for HIV medicines in the hospitals. They also attended a session with MDACS (Mumbai Districts Aid Control Society) and learned about the counseling hours with doctors, behavior of the departments towards a positive person and the problems faced by NGO’s in government hospitals.
- AAWC hosted students from Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India where a presentation on sustainable livelihood based on our Umeed vocational training program was conducted.
- Monthly Check-ups: Monthly medical check-up and dental camp was conducted for the beneficiaries.
Umang Updates
- Therapy Sessions: The children attend dog therapy sessions weekly. They learn to identify and correct their behavioral and communication problem through therapy by talking to the dog, feeding him, sharing secrets and learning manners. They are now comfortable with the dog and have become friendly with each other. They have learnt to maintain discipline and patience.
- Activities: E-Learning: The children learn nursery rhymes, numbers and alphabets through-learning and have progressed quite a lot. They all merrily and earnestly sing along. They have started using English words in their daily communication.
- A fun activity called “Identify the taste” was conducted with the Umang kids to gauge if they could spot the taste for different food items such as chili powder, salt and sugar. Most of them could recognize taste and were excited for the activity.
- During Story Telling, an issue is incorporated into the story and told to the children so that they understand the moral lesson in an innovative way.
- Recreational excursion: The Umang children enjoyed a day out for outdoor games on the ground. They were taught different exercises including jumping, running and races. All children were excited and participated enthusiastically in different sporting activities.
