Dear Friends,
Last week was a whirlwind of fun and learning for the 2500 children we serve at Sheltering Arms Early Education & Family Centers! We celebrated our 125th anniversary with a three day celebration of reading and storytelling, part of Operation StoryBook, our year-round literacy initiative.
On Wednesday night, guests gathered at Spelman College for an art-inspired birthday party for Sheltering Arms. The night featured a photography exhibit at Spelman's Museum of Fine Art, including works dating back to the 1880s when Spelman and Sheltering Arms were founded. Our children's artwork was on display, too, as part of a silent auction of collaborative works our classes created with local artists. Of course, at Sheltering Arms we believe in learning by doing, so our guests became artists and part of the art themselves, dancing with the Drum Cafe and creating a mural that will hang in a new Sheltering Arms center at DH Stanton Elementary School, opening in 2015. We also had a chance during the evening to thank the sponsors and patrons who helped us raise more than $100,000 for early learning scholarships and books for our 2500 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
On Thursday and Friday, the fun continued in all fifteen Sheltering Arms centers with our annual Read-A-Thon. Elected officials, local celebrities and authors, Sheltering Arms alumni and grandparents, and community and corporate volunteers spent the two days sharing their favorite stories with our children. Throughout the event, children participated in learning activities and special storytelling performances related to the books they would take home on Friday. Our 3 and 4 year olds received The King with Dirty Feet, an Indian folktale by local author Rob Cleveland, and infants and toddlers received Harry the Dirty Dog or Clifford's Bath Time. The classrooms were full of imaginative arts, crafts, and activities about bath time and caring for our pets and our planet, themes in the three books.
The Operation StoryBook Read-A-Thon each year kicks off a year-long program of literacy enrichment activities for children and parents, and a book donation program that provides a new book every month to each of our 2500 children. Book ownership is one of the most important predictors of reading success. Since Operation StoryBook started, over 200,000 books have gone home with our children!
Thank you for your continued support of Sheltering Arms, which empowers us to give our young children a strong start on a successful education and life!
Sincerely,
Paige
