Since November 2015, 259 donors have raised over $74,914 to support homeless and low-income women in Washington, DC. People experience homelessness for all sorts of reasons; lack of affordable housing, medical emergencies, job loss, mental health concerns or the death of a loved one.
We are so grateful for the continued support from generous donors like you that strengthen the Village. It is only though an amazing community of supporters that women like Jacqueline, whose story is included below, are able to find safety and a broad spectrum of services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
Jacqueline learned about N Street Village while staying at Harriet Tubman Women's Shelter. She had moved to D.C. from Georgia to be closer to her mother, but the D.C. apartment she and her mother were living in caught on fire.
"I was depressed and suicidal," she said. "I was a hermit and was afraid to go out. But I came here [to Bethany Women's Day Center], and there was so much help. There were so many programs; it was everything I needed, from clothes to getting my ID and residency. There was just so much help."
After a little more than a year, Jacqueline is about to move into her own apartment once the inspection is completed.
"This place kept me from wanting to die. I can see all the progress I'm making that I couldn't see before. It's just amazing. If you're struggling and you need help, I recommend coming to Bethany's."
Bethany Women’s Day Center serves about 80 to 90 women each day and provides a place for them to get a reprieve from the hot and humid D.C. weather. This summer, we want to ensure the center is well equipped to provide women with a cool place to pass these hot days. We plan to expand our activities for women to reduce stress and enjoy time together—from card and board games, to arts and crafts, to more cookouts.
Your support ensures each woman has a safe place to shelter from the heat, as well as receive a healthy meal, access to showers and laundry facilities, clothing, support in areas of employment and mental health services, and much more.
Thank you for ensuring every woman who comes to our door has access to the services she needs in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
