Water safety and drowning prevention through education and the teaching of Survival Swimming skills. The NSRI we believes that every child should be able to play safely in, and around water. The NSRI's Water Safety Education programme focuses on teaching South Africans who are most vulnerable - children under the age of 14, to be safe around water. Considering that in South Africa approximately 450 children drown every year, the need for Water Safety Education is obvious.
Each year, thousands of people succumb to drowning in South Africa, not only along the coast, but also inland, in swimming pools and dams. It is vital and essential that a greater number of people are educated in water safety and drowning prevention - starting with children who are the most vulnerable and need to be reached through focused water safety and drowning prevention education.
We present an effective Water Safety curriculum to create awareness about the dangers of water, what to do if someone gets into trouble, how to help a friend in need, how to perform bystander CPR, and who, and how to call for help. Our Survival Swimming programme focuses on teaching children four skills that will save their life should they suddenly find themselves out of their depth in water. We teach them to breath control, orientation in the water, to float and move at least 5m to safety.
We aim to reach under-resourced and rural areas where children are particularly vulnerable because they have to cross rivers to get to their schools, and they are prone to play in and around dams and waterways. By teaching water safety within these rural areas, we are able to not only ensure that the children know about the dangers of water but also to make informed choices when assisting someone who might find themselves in trouble in water.
