During the first quarter of 2024, the Drowning Prevention department of the National Sea Rescue Institute has been very busy.

Water Safety instructors as well as swimming instructors have been traveling around the country, teaching learners about aspects around how to be safe around water and what to do if there is an emergency.

Between January and April 2024, the following statistics were recorded:

11 Instructors in the Western and Northern Cape impacted 5191 lives through Survival Swimming and 32 529 lives through Water Safety Education.

4 Instructors in the Eastern Cape taught 547 Survival Swimming lessons and 16 278 learners for Water Safety lessons.

Moving North, four instructors in Gauteng instructed 1161 Survival Swimming lessons and 18 663 Water Safety lessons, while one instructor in Limpopo and one in Mpumalanga taught 6127 and 1503 Water Safety lessons respectfully.

The Free State and North West Provinces each have one instructor. In the Free State 126 Survival Swimming lessons were taught and 3875 Water Safety lessons. While in the North West Province 126 Survival Swimming lessons were presented, and 6745 Water Safety lessons were taught.

In Kwa-Zulu Natal, eleven instructors saw 159 learners for Survival Swimming lessons and 6745 for Water Safety.

The total number of Survival Swimming lesson taught were: 9262 adn Water Safety lessons amounted to: 159 439.

All the above lessons are presented in schools and communities that have been under-resourced and show vulnerability towards possible drowning incidents.

It is vital that the NSRI's Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Programmes continue to be presented to learners across the country as these programmes are directly linked to the organisation's mandate of ensuring a water safe South Africa. Every drowning we can prevent is a life saved, lives changes, and futures created.
