CharLata is a remote coastal island in the Meghna River basin, accessible mainly by boat, located in Rangabali Upazila of Patuakhali District, Bangladesh. During the 30 days of Ramadan, OBHIZATRIK Foundation will provide nutritious meals and initiate the installation of safe drinking water tubewells for the entire island community. The project aims to support more than 5,000 vulnerable coastal residents, ensuring dignity, improved health and resilience during the holy month.
CharLata Island faces extreme vulnerability due to river erosion, cyclones, salinity intrusion due to being a coastal island just neighbouring the Bay of Bengal and pollution from nearby coal-based power generation. These conditions damage crops, contaminate drinking water and affect air quality, leading to health problems. During Ramadan and summer, food insecurity and lack of safe water increase hardship, especially for women who travel long distances for safe drinking water while fasting.
OBHIZATRIK Foundation will provide nutritious community meals throughout Ramadan and install at least 12 saline resistant tubewells across the island. Meals will be prepared and distributed locally, ensuring fair access for all residents. The new safe drinking water points will reduce health risks, ease the burden on women and improve access to safe drinking water during Ramadan and beyond.
The project will improve nutrition, reduce waterborne diseases and strengthen community wellbeing. Reliable access to food and safe water will enhance resilience against climate related shocks and environmental pollution. By establishing durable water infrastructure and community based food support, the initiative contributes to sustainable living conditions in one of Bangladesh's most climate vulnerable regions.
