Nourishing Hope: Urban agriculture for elders

El pasado 1 de junio se llevó a cabo la tan ansiada inauguración del nuevo local comunitario para el huerto "Ayni 1 de Junio". Esta fue aún más especial ya que coincidió su aniversario. En esta ocasión, contamos con la participación de diversos actores que colaboraron en el diseño y la construcción del proyecto.

Tras poco más de un año de acompañamiento a este proceso participativo, nos emociona ver materializado un diseño hecho por y para la comunidad, que refleja sus expectativas y logra suplir las necesidades de sus integrantes, quienes podrán llevar a cabo sus actividades diarias y compartir conocimientos sobre agroecología en un espacio propio y cómodo.

Este trabajo se llevó a cabo gracias al apoyo de:

• Los miembros del huerto, quienes con la ayuda de un maestro de obra de la comunidad, realizaron los trabajos de construcción en diversas faenas semanales
• La ONG INGEC, quienes vienen colaborando con los integrantes del huerto en temas de agrocología y gestión de su espacio y que nos brindaron su apoyo en la organización de la construcción del nuevo local comunitario
• A todas y cada una de las donaciones recibidas con la que hemos podido obtener materiales de calidad necesarios para culminar la construcción de este espacio
• Así mismo, el huerto recibió la visita de representantes del gobierno canadiense, quienes acudieron a conocer el proyecto MUSA (Mujeres Unidas por la Seguridad Alimentaria y Ambiental) lo que, entre otras cosas, otorga una validación extra al trabajo que se ha realizado en este espacio

On June 1st, we celebrated the much-anticipated inauguration of the new community center for the "Ayni 1 de Junio" garden. This event was even more special as it coincided with the garden's anniversary. On this occasion, we had the participation of various stakeholders who collaborated in the design and construction of the project.

After a little over a year of accompanying this participatory process, we are excited to see a design materialized by and for the community, that reflects their expectations and meets their needs. This new space allows the members to carry out their daily activities and share knowledge about agroecology in a comfortable environment.

This achievement was made possible thanks to the support of:

• The garden members, who, with the help of a builder from the neighbourhood, carried out the construction work through weekly tasks.
• The NGO INGEC, who have been collaborating with garden members regarding the management of the garden and provided support in organizing the construction of the new community center.
• All the donations received, which allowed us to obtain the quality materials necessary to complete the construction of this space.
• Additionally, the garden received a visit from representatives of the Canadian government, who came to learn about the MUSA project (Women United for Food and Environmental Security). This visit, among other things, provides extra validation for the work that has been done in this space.
