Not For Sale: Rescuing Victims of HumanTrafficking

Introduction

Not for Sale, Rescuing Victims of Human Trafficking is a Project of Rescue Foundation.  This is implemented at our Protection Home in Delhi.  It provides protection to children and few adult women who are rescued from abusive homes, streets, runaway kids, and young girls who have been sold, abused by either parents or relatives.

Over the past years we have seen a steady flow of young girls, children, adult women or mothers with kids being rescued and  sent for shelter and protection to our Home.  Most of them stay for longer periods till the respective Child Welfare Committees orders release. Few are referred for a night shelter or a short stay by the Local Police or Child Welfare Committees

Rescue Foundation Delhi continued to provide shelter care, education, counselling, healthcare, legal support, and rehabilitation services to children residing in the Child Care Institution. Despite challenges such as staff shortages, National Institute Of Open School examinations, medical emergencies, and operational difficulties, all daily activities and compliance requirements were managed effectively. Regular counselling, medical support, educational activities, vocational training, and legal coordination were conducted throughout the month.

Successfully ensured timely completion of all assigned cases and documentation.

The Rehabilitation Rescue Foundation provides food, clothing, shelter and conducts several awareness sensitization programs along with vocational Training such as Tailoring, Art & Craft, Yoga, Dance, Sports.

All children and young adults who are eligible for formal schools are sent to school with lady escorts; others are provided informal education at the Home.

Each child is monitored for Health, Hygiene and awareness of self is done regularly.  Children who require medical assistance are taken to local hospitals and treated.

Sessions are conducted on Legal Rights of the Children on periodic bases.

The Home is Licenced under the Indian Govt Acts for Child Care Institution Act.  Thus there are regular meetings and visits of the Child Welfare Committees, the District Child Protection Units in the vicinity.

Major Achievements

• General Health check at the Home was conducted for 250 children on average

Two children required admission to IHBAS for psychiatric treatment. However, due to the long distance to the hospital and limited resources, only one girl could be admitted. A staff member had to stay with her throughout the admission

Education 

• Two students passed the Class 10 examination, securing 47% and 59% respectively. One Class 10 NIOS student passed with 52.33% marks, 
• Our Class 10 NIOS student successfully passed the examination with 52.33% marks.

Participating in Events/Outings

• An exposure visit to Rishikesh and various awareness sessions positively supported children’s well-being. 
• Mediation session by Sandeep from Pranic Healing.
• Celebration of Mother’s Day.
• Session on POCSO act and its causes and prevention was conducted as per DCPU-V orders by Staff.
• Sensitisation on POCSO act that is caused due to use of social media was organised by DCPU-V where our two minor and 4 major performed Skits at a School
• Session on menstrual health and personal hygiene was conducted by one staff
• Guruji Satsang conducted by Gaurav Agarwal and Nalini ji.
• Celebrated the birthday of the release child with all children.
• A motivational movie is shown every Saturday

Facilitating Documentation of Children

It is important for us to facilitate identity documents and bank accounts for our children to enable them to enrol in schools, deposit their compensation.  During this period the staff enabled 13 Aadhar Cards and 4 bank accounts. 

Restoration

A total of 60 children were restored to their families after proper counselling, family follow-up, and coordination with concerned authorities. Family counselling sessions and regular family interactions helped strengthen relationships and support the reintegration process

Compensation

6 children received compensation in child labour cases

Awareness Session 

• First Aid Training by a Nursing 0fficer for all children.
• Regular meditation sessions are being conducted for the children.
• Session on Understanding interpersonal conflicts and healthy ways to resolve them by Psychologist and counsellor.
• A motivational movie is shown every Saturday.
• All staff attended the POSH session
• Tuberculosis (TB) screening camp was conducted by doctors from Ambedkar Hospital.
• Celebration of Id-ul-Zuha(Bakrid)
• Medicine was sprayed to control mosquitoes.
• A fire safety training session conducted by Sandeep Dabas covered fire prevention, emergency response, and safety measures, with active participation from all staff and children who gained practical knowledge. 

Challenges

• Difficulty coordinating with families during home visits and follow-up activities.
• Two girls accidentally swallowed a safety pin and a sharpener blade, requiring immediate medical attention.
• Managing medical emergencies and arranging immediate treatment within a limited time frame was challenging.
• Some adolescent girls displayed strong emotional attachment to one another and engaged in inappropriate physical closeness, requiring prompt counselling and behavioural guidance from staff.
• Limited computer resources hindered practical computer training sessions
