Project Report | Jul 7, 2026
This Is Their Forever Home

By Rebecca Chidley | Volunteer

Recently, Apao Cat founder Vicky Debut was interviewed by a local reporter to share the story behind the sanctuary and the mission that has guided it for more than a decade. In the interview, Vicky spoke about why Apao Cat was created, the special-needs cats who call the sanctuary home, and the ongoing challenges of caring for some of the most vulnerable felines. We've translated and shared highlights from the interview below so our supporters around the world can learn more about the work they make possible.

Vicky Debut, Founder of a Feline Sanctuary: "The cats we take in are blind, deaf, have amputations, or test positive for feline leukemia. That's why they aren't available for adoption—this is already their home."

Located in the Barcelona province, in an environment designed with feline well-being in mind, Apao Cat features large outdoor spaces, climbing areas, and wooden shelters—a permanent home for the cats who need it most.

More than three decades ago, Vicky Debut began her journey in animal welfare as a volunteer at an animal shelter. That experience marked the beginning of a lifelong calling, one that would eventually become the project of her life. In 2010, together with several colleagues, she made a long-held dream come true by founding Apao Cat, a sanctuary dedicated to providing refuge and a dignified life for especially vulnerable stray cats—those who are ill, disabled, elderly, or otherwise unlikely to survive on their own.

Located in the province of Barcelona, in a setting designed specifically for feline well-being, the sanctuary offers spacious outdoor areas, trees, climbing structures, shelters, and wooden houses where the cats can feel safe and at peace. Today, Apao Cat has become a permanent home for the cats who need it most and a powerful example of dedication and compassion toward some of the most overlooked animals.
