Houston is working to become the first major metro to achieve equilibrium-where housing availability, essential services, and sustainable funding ensure people move from homelessness to a home within 90 days. As the lead agency for The Way Home, CFTH is building the partnerships and infrastructure needed to accomplish this and ensure that no one sleeps outside while awaiting assistance. Our system has used disaster and COVID relief funds to house 32,000 people since 2012, with over 80% maintaining stability. But relying on emergency funds is unsustainable. Many-young adults, families, those newly homeless due to economic hardship, and individuals with complex mental health or substance use challenges-fall outside our current resources. We must act now to build a sustainable, inclusive system with cross-disciplinary support to serve everyone facing homelessness.
