Toward Equilibrium: A Family's Path Out of Homeles

By Kirby Attwell | Development Associate

For Turiya and her three children, the weeks leading up to the holidays were marked by uncertainty, exhaustion, and fear. After fleeing a domestic violence situation, Turiya found herself without stable housing, unemployed, and struggling daily to secure food and safety for her family. At times, the family had no choice but to sleep in their car, doing everything they could to survive while protecting three young children from the trauma surrounding them.

On November 13, 2025, Turiya was enrolled in a Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) program through Endeavors, entering Houston’s coordinated homelessness response system. What followed was a powerful reminder that while housing placements hinge on many external factors, a collaborative system that works with urgency and care moves us closer to Equilibrium.

Turiya had been approved for housing and selected a property where she and her children could finally begin again. But just as move-in plans were taking shape, the process was derailed by a sudden change in the property’s management. Her application and paperwork were lost during the transition, forcing her case manager to determine what had happened at a moment when she was supposed to be receiving keys.

With a new property manager in place, approvals now had to be escalated to leadership, triggering delays and a waiting game that threatened to undo weeks of progress. The timing could not have been worse: the holidays were approaching, offices were closing, and decision-makers were out. Much of what was needed was beyond anyone’s control.

But no one stopped advocating.

Turiya’s case manager at Endeavors, Rodney, worked relentlessly, pushing at every level, navigating shifting processes, and refusing to let the family fall through the cracks. At the same time, CFTH Landlord Engagement staff stepped in to coordinate, troubleshoot, and advocate on behalf of the family with the property. Their collective efforts reflect what it takes to build a system capable of reaching Equilibrium, one that responds to barriers without delay and stays centered on people, not process.

By December 23rd, there was hope, but no guarantee.

Then, on Christmas Eve, the call finally came.

“I am moving her in now.”

On December 24, 2025, just over a month after entering the housing program, Turiya and her children were placed into housing. Today, Turiya remains housed. Her children are attending school and beginning to experience consistency again, something that had been impossible while living without shelter. Though Turiya continues to navigate the emotional and financial aftermath of domestic violence, unemployment, and single parenting, she is no longer doing so without a foundation.

Turiya's experience reflects the challenges many survivors face as they work to rebuild their lives after experiencing violence and housing instability. Through support for the New Street Homelessness Action Plan, CFTH has funded stability services that help individuals and families overcome these barriers, including Domestic Violence Mobile Support. This specialized program provides trauma-informed, mobile services that meet survivors where they are, offering immediate support, safety planning, resource navigation, and ongoing assistance as they work toward long-term stability.

To date, Domestic Violence Mobile Support has served 146 individuals across our community. Together, housing interventions and specialized support services help ensure that survivors like Turiya have the resources they need not only to secure housing but also to build a safer, more stable future for themselves and their families.
