CancerLink Jockey Club Support Centre, Kwai Chung (“KCC”) entered its second half -year (Oct 17 - Mar 18) of service since its official commencement in June 2017. Since January 2018, KCC has extended its reach to other nearby urban areas in the New Territories.
KCC continued to adopt a strength-based family-centred approach to address the practical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families living with cancer. The top five KCC user profiles are breast, colon, lung, prostate and nasopharyngeal carcinoma cancer patients. Since January 2018, we started an orientation programme with Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) located in the same district targeting newly diagnosed colon and prostate cancer patients and their families to support them with the right information to help them make the right treatment decisions. Since then, more male patients have sought services from our centre and we have organised various group programmes to address the physical wellbeing of male patients with prostate cancers.
In the reporting period, KCC engaged 383 new users, of which 38% were family members. 23% were at the point of diagnosis/waiting for treatment, 51% were at treatment stage, 22% were in rehabilitation stage, 2% were at reoccurrence and 2% were at palliative stages. They were split across the following age groups: 7% under 40 years of age, 42% between 41 to 60 years of age, and 51% over 61 years of age.
KCC has actively cultivated partnerships and engagements with organisations in the community, such as the Medical Social Service Unit, elderly centres and female centres. The case referral mechanism with Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) was well-defined and streamlined and regular outreach programmes for the breast cancer patients were organised with the Breast Clinic of PMH.
To recap, KCC has reached a total of 788 registered users with 31,804 attendances since its opening in June 2017. We will continue to serve our community and try our best to ensure no one faces cancer alone.
