It’s hard to believe that the fall semester at our GlobeMed chapter has gone by so quickly! We have been quite busy this semester and we are already looking forward to what we have planned for next semester. Our seven-year partnership with Himalayan HealthCare (HHC) is strong, and our relationship with the CU Boulder community is truly being strengthened. This report will give you a glimpse of what our chapter has been up to!
In October, our chapter helped plan the fourth annual Colorado Global Health Conference, which was themed around global health and the Syrian Refugee Crisis. We heard from wonderful speakers and panelists about the complexities of this complex situation. Because the event was co-hosted with the University of Denver and Colorado College chapters, it was a fantastic opportunity for idea sharing with other GlobeMed chapters and community leaders that share GlobeMed’s passion and values.
Our chapter’s ghU Team wanted to develop a more coherent and interactive learning experience that promoted critical thinking and deep discussion around issues of inequity. This year, the team developed a lecture series, in which we focused on a single topic for about a month at a time. Some of the themes we have explored this semester include mass incarceration, immigrant and refugee health, and the social implications of disease. We promoted active learning through activities like GlobeMed Jeopardy, AIDS and Immigration simulations, and workshops. We also built stronger connections with our community by having guest lectures from members of our Community Advisory Board as well as other student groups such as bridgeCU--an organization that focuses on creating dialogues that bridge partisan lines. This kind partnership with other student groups will be a huge focus for us next semester.
The Community Outreach Team’s goal this semester was to coordinate multiple events in order to build a connected community for all chapter members. These events have consisted of both social and volunteering opportunities, with the goal of making our members feel involved and connected to GlobeMed’s community and mission. Volunteering in the community has been something GlobeMed has long wanted to do but until this year was not a priority. We are excited to see this become a priority in our chapter and we plan to continue to search for volunteer opportunities that give us an outlet to put our rhetoric around global health equity to action in our own community.
In order to inform our new and existing members on our chapter’s goals and mission statement, the Marketing Team created a handout that was distributed to each member. We believe that this will further the understanding of what is important to our chapter and GlobeMed as an organization. The Marketing Team will be focusing on putting together videos from the interviews conducted by the past GROW teams. We are excited as to the possibilities this presents to integrate HHC into our chapter conversations.

Our chapter’s Campaigns Team has so far held two Eat-to-Feed events, in which we have been able to raise funds for our partner, in addition to building a sense of community among our members. We have also been partnering with local businesses and organizations to sponsor our chapter. We will be ending this semester by sending out letters and emails for our Individual Giving campaign. Next semester we plan on holding a Benefit Brunch event in February. We will send out more information as the event approaches and look forward to seeing you there!
We are very excited to announce that a team of interns were selected for the 2017 Grass Roots Onsite Work (GROW) Internship. Five interns have been selected and will represent our chapter by participating in field work in Nepal this summer. The application process included weekly discussions, written responses, creative projects and an interview. The GROW Internship is constructed around four core values: Inquire, Engage, Reflect, Express. Next semester, the GROW interns will prepare for their fieldwork in Nepal by educating themselves about relevant issues, including Nepali language, history, and culture. This will allow the interns to further explore the role of GROW in building lasting partnerships and development abroad with our partner in Nepal.
