Partnership in Action

By Ellie Falletta | Director of Finance, G.R.O.W. Team Member 2013

Children in the Kami (blacksmith) community

It has been almost two months since our Grassroots Onsite Work (G.R.O.W.) team has returned from working with our partner organization Himalayan HealthCare (HHC).  Although Nepal can sometimes feel far away from Boulder, I can attest that the village of Tipling, where we lived and worked, has stayed close to our hearts.  After personally seeing the projects that we are funding in some of the most remote and difficult to access regions in Nepal, we have all come back inspired to continue our work at CU.

While in Tipling, G.R.O.W interns were directly involved in the selection of four families to receive goats as part of one of HHC’s income generation programs.  Families were selected from the Kami blacksmith community, who are the lowest caste in Tipling.  The selection criteria was based on family members participation in the Women’s Empowerment classes, sending their children to school, using an improved cook stove and latrine, as well as taking their general situation into account.  It was such a rewarding experience getting to know all of the families personally and being able to connect with them despite our many cultural differences.  The resilience of these people living in such an unforgiving environment never ceased to amaze us!

The work that HHC has been doing in the Dhading District for the past 20 years has dramatically changed the landscape and situation for people living in removed villages like Tipling.  Having the opportunity to personally meet the people that our funds and HHC’s programs are helping was a life changing experience for all of us and served to further strengthen our partnership with HHC and the local community.

The whole chapter at CU is working hard to plan fun and exciting events for the rest of the year.  We are inspired to continue to explore our place in the movement for global health equity both in the local community and abroad!   We are especially looking forward for Anil Parajuli, Executive Director and co-founder of HHC to visit Boulder for our annual Benefit Dinner on October 5th.

We thank you for your generosity and continued support of our projects.  None of the incredible work that HHC is doing would be possible without the support of people like you!  If you are interested in learning about events that we have coming up during the school year, project updates or want to meet our new Executive Board, please visit out website at globemedcu.org!

In solidarity
