Nepal Emergency COVID-19 fund

The fact that the year 2020 came with immense challenges for all of us cannot be denied. Though it seems like we are all in the same boat, for Nepal, the Covid-19 pandemic was the third tragedy since 1996 to threaten its progress as a nation and its very survival. For a full decade, the Maoist rebellion rocked the country, finally ending in 2006. Nepal had barely recovered from that trauma when the next overwhelming event occurred - the devastating earthquake of 2015. This pandemic is the most recent in a series of violent and seemingly never-ending upheavals. 

The Maoist insurrection caused the deaths of over 17,000 people, including civilians, insurgents, army and police personnel, destroyed thousands of schools, and resulted in the internal displacement of hundreds of thousands of people (mostly in rural Nepal). Though some children have been given education and protective support, due to the lack of funds, many schools still have to be repaired or replaced.

 
Then, while people were still recovering from the post Maoist Civil War, a massive earthquake of 7.8 magnitude shook Nepal on April 25, 2015 killed over 9,000 people and according to UNICEF, destroyed or damaged around 9,000 schools and 30,000 classrooms. Almost one million children were out of school in the immediate aftermath and the quake was followed by a major aftershock on May 12. Government support was very limited post-earthquake and it left civilians without much hope.

On top of these two major events has come the pandemic known as COVID-19, which has completely damaged Nepal and its people. In Nepal, there is no trillion-dollar aid package and there are no unemployment benefits. This is making life very critical here, and people are on the verge of losing everything, including any hope for survival. As a local organization, we need your support now...more than ever.

We were there long before the news cameras arrived, and we’ll be there long after the cameras leave. We know how to make our communities more resilient to future disasters, and we’re already hard at work. With your help, we will continue to keep over 3,000 children in schools; over 200 girls in schools & collages; 100 orphans and vulnerable children in a safe place to live with the gift of education; the agricultural support program, “Seeds of Hope" for over 500 women and their families and a thriving future for over 10,000 local community members.

Year 2020 came with lots of challanges for all of us wround the globe and left many of us with heavy hearts but this weight was lifted with our connections with amazing supporters like you.

Every year we had the privilage to welcome our donors, supporters, volunteers, friends and familes in Nepal and work side by side in communities and share our progress and updates but this year due to global pandemic none of those became possible. So we are trying to share our important work progress of 2020 through this video.

On behalf of our community, families of porter, single mothers, children and girls we would like to thank you and we hope to continue working with you in future.

During this week of Thanksgiving, we wanted to share how thankful we are for all of our donors, friends, and families around the globe who support our life-changing work. We couldn’t do it without you. This year, due to the Pandemic, The Small World had to quickly pivot to find a way to support, connect and relieve families and communities from the crisis this virus has created for the most vulnerable families who already struggle with many challenges.

You play an incredibly important role in Helping our Children, vulnerable women and families of trekking porters, daily wage earners and single mothers and we deeply appreciate your support. 

As we look ahead to the many challenges of 2021, this year’s giving Tuesday will be more important than ever for The Small World.  With your help, we will provide a safe place to live, parental care, and educational opportunities for over 100 new children in our newly constructed Arhaus Children’s Home; support our ongoing programs, “Himalayan Hope Home,” “Solukhumbhu Girls Dorm,” “Community Health Center,” “Sponsorships,” and offer critical resources for our communities as well.

On December 1st, our partner, GlobalGiving, is giving away $1 Million. With $1 Million in funding available from GlobalGiving, we need your help to reach our goal of raising $50,000 to support Arhaus Children’s Home. The more you give, the larger share we get out of $1 Million USD in incentive funds.
