Challenge

Severe flooding in Nepal was intensified by the breaching of a glacial ice dam, releasing a sudden surge of water into downstream community Our response is focused on purchasing supplies locally whenever possible, allowing donor funds to go further while avoiding international shipping costs, delays, and import duties. Priority supplies include solar lights, water filtration systems, and locally manufactured family tents costing approximately $50 each sheltering up to five people.

Solution

This approach allows us to address immediate needs for safe shelter, clean water, and lighting while simultaneously preparing for the recovery and rebuilding phases. By combining Disaster Aid Nepal's local knowledge, relationships, and response capacity with Disaster Aid USA's disaster response and resource-mobilization capabilities, we can help families move from emergency relief toward safe, sustainable recovery.

Long-Term Impact

Long-term recovery efforts will focus on restoring access to clean, safe water, providing solar lighting to families and communities where power remains disrupted, and supporting a pathway toward stable housing. Families will transition from immediate emergency tents into intermediate shelters designed to last up to two years, providing a safer and more durable living environment while permanent homes are rebuilt. By using locally sourced materials such as bamboo and local labor.
