Working With Nature & Our Communities

By Jordan Macha | Executive Director

Galveston Bay
Galveston Bay

2020 has been a year like no other. Just in the last six months the Gulf Coast experienced a record hurricane season; and while we've been fortunate in the Galveston Bay Watershed with minimal direct impacts, we know that we are on borrowed time until the next storm and hurricane season approaches.

This year we've been working closely with communities across the Lower Galveston Bay Watershed - from our bayou headwaters down to our bays and the Gulf of Mexico - to think strategically and creatively about what we want protection to look like. We've hosted meetings with decision-makers, like representatives from the City of Houston and Harris County, to outline a community vision of resiliency, encouraging the integration of nature-based solutions into their plans for the future.

Houston’s progress toward equity in flood reduction reflects the trajectory of environmental justice and climate action across the nation. In our quest toward disaster preparedness, conservation, and clean energy, we are working to ensure that communities of color and low-income populations are not left behind is crucial to progressing toward a more sustainable and more equitable future.

Right now, we are making strides to ensure all our communities are protected and that we are working with - rather than against - nature for our long-term resilience. Just last night, we hosted a community forum with over 150 registrants to discuss the Galveston Bay Coastal Barrier project - a $14-18 billion project that may irreparably harm Galveston Bay. Further up our watershed, we are encouraging the Army Corps of Engineers to design flood-proofing projects that enhance our natural systems throughout the Buffalo Bayou Watershed - like protecting and restoring the Katy Prairie, a historic coastal prairie that provides multiple benefits to our watershed.

Protecting our communities is critical; but we can't wait for a “silver bullet” solution that will take decades to build and poses significant risk our ecosystem. With this in mind, we pushing for a multi-tiered approach which includes policies and projects that enhance watershed protection and furthers the investment in natural infrastructure.

We couldn’t do this work without you. Thank you for your ongoing support.
