Dear Friends,
This summer was one of our most memorable yet. The 4th Annual O’odham Camp brought together youth ages 6–17 from across districts for a week of culture, learning, and adventure.
Camp began with laughter and movement as Mr. Sean from the Healthy O’odham Promotion Program led games that kept campers smiling all day. At Hanam Kek Rec, older youth joined basketball drills with WE R1 T.O. Basketball while younger campers cooled off at the splash pad. These moments of play reminded us how important it is to create safe spaces where children can be active and joyful.
Campers also traveled to Kitt Peak Observatory. Guided by Ms. Jacelle and youth workers from Schuk Toak District, they explored the site’s history and science. One camper proudly recognized his grandfather’s name on a design at the observatory, a powerful reminder of how heritage and community live on in the next generation.
The San Pedro community also welcomed our campers for an overnight campout, blessing our group before early morning bahidaj harvesting. Youth learned not only the practice of gathering but the meaning behind it, connecting them to traditions that have sustained O’odham families for centuries. Finally, activities closed out camp with a joyful movie day, complete with pizza and popcorn, where laughter echoed through the room.
Thanks to your support, more than 50 youth experienced culture, language, and community in ways that will stay with them for years. They learned traditional songs, crafted popovers, harvested bahidaj, and built friendships across districts. As we look ahead, we are preparing fall workshops and new adventures that will continue to strengthen identity, wellness, and pride.
With gratitude,
The NAAF Team
