Even though summer is still ahead, the spirit of the Summer Adventure Program is already alive across the district. The first months of 2026 have been filled with cultural learning, traditional games, and wellness activities that help prepare students for another meaningful season of camp. Traditional games have been a major focus. Staff reintroduced Toka and Wuicuda during the winter months, teaching not just the rules but the songs, responsibilities, and cultural teachings behind them. Girls began learning how to make and care for their own Toka sticks, and staff are seeking a cultural expert to demonstrate ballmaking for the men’s game. These early sessions help students build confidence and cultural pride before summer begins.
Wellness activities have also kept families engaged. Monthly Fun Runs — hosted with GuVo District, HOPP, and TONHC — brought the community together for movement and connection. Planning is underway for a fall Tball league and possibly a coachpitch team, helping students stay active yearround. Behind the scenes, staff have been preparing new cultural lessons, guest presentations, and handson activities for camp. As more Nation departments reopen for inperson programming, opportunities for collaboration continue to grow.
Staff training has also been a priority. Team members completed CPR/First Aid certification, pursued BIE volunteer clearance, and one staff member completed 35 hours of Birth Worker Training to better support families with infants. These efforts ensure that the summer program remains safe, welcoming, and responsive to community needs.
Planning for summer is well underway, with activities and schedules being prepared for both GuVo and Ali Chugk communities. Pia Oik families will be welcome to join either location. Thanks to your support, students will step into a summer filled with culture, learning, and community — and the groundwork being laid now ensures it will be one of our strongest summers yet.
