Rebuilding Lives After the Myanmar Earthquake

By Dolci Donata | Founder and Manager of Baanunrak

1. Executive Summary
We are incredibly proud to report a major milestone in our ongoing relief efforts for the families devastated by the March 2025 earthquake in Mandalay, Myanmar. Thanks to the unwavering support of our donors and partners, Baan Unrak has successfully fulfilled its promise to construct 77 safe, durable houses for displaced families. As we transition from immediate shelter construction, our upcoming focus will shift toward sustainability monitoring and addressing the critical, ongoing healthcare needs of these vulnerable communities.

2. Project Achievements & Impact
  • 77 Homes Completed: Between May 2025 and May 2026, our team and volunteers completed the construction of all 77 promised houses. The final 40 homes were completed during the recent dry season, moving families out from under temporary tarpaulins and into secure structures.
  • Dignity and Security: These houses provide more than just shelter from the scorching sun and monsoon rains; they offer a secure space where families can lock their doors, protect their few belongings, and sleep without fear.
  • Direct Community Relief: In tandem with construction, our field team utilized remaining project funds directly within Mandalay's poorest sectors and government hospitals, purchasing essential medicines for patients who could not afford treatment.

3. Upcoming Plans & Next Steps
While the construction phase is complete, the socioeconomic challenges in the region remain severe. Moving forward, Baan Unrak has structured a two-fold plan to ensure long-term support:
  • October Field Visit & Evaluation: In October 2026, the Baan Unrak leadership and field team will conduct an on-site monitoring visit to the village in Mandalay. The purpose of this trip is to personally inspect the structural integrity of the 77 homes after the monsoon season and evaluate the overall living conditions of the beneficiary families.
  • Medical Assistance Fund: Our upcoming relief phase will explicitly target healthcare accessibility. Many earthquake survivors continue to suffer from chronic illnesses or injuries requiring ongoing hospital visits and prescriptions. Because these families completely lack the financial resources for medical care, we are expanding our scope to provide direct funding for emergency surgeries, hospital expenses, and life-saving medications.

4. A Message of Gratitude
Achieving the goal of 77 homes seemed daunting a year ago, but the collective power of our global community made it possible. By providing shelter, you have given these families a foundation upon which to rebuild their lives and a safe environment for their children to grow. We look forward to sharing detailed photos and family stories following our October field visit.
