Rebuilding Lives After the Myanmar Earthquake

By Dolci Donata | Founder and Manager of Baanunrak

From the beginning of the Myanmar crisis, Baan Unrak Children’s Home, Green Island School, and AMURTEL have stood together to support those in need. Bound by the ideology that “We are all children of the Cosmic Family”, our mission in this catastrophe has been not only to rescue but also to inspire compassion, unity, and action. We’ve mobilized our communities and networks into a true movement of hope.

We know our capacities are limited, but together we’ve done something beautiful. We brought hope, resilience, and the courage to rebuild — showing victims that they are not alone.

Our action plan & response

Phase 1: Emergency Deployment (Completed)

    • Distribution of essential food and survival items across Mandalay:
      • Total spent: USD 39,764
      • Families helped: Over 4,000
    • An assessment was also done to evaluate the long-term needs of the most affected communities.

Phase 2: Reconstruction of shelter and community support (In Progress)

    • We focused our efforts on 2 largely affected communities in the townships of Maha Aungmye and Chanmyathazi
    • Based on the relief team’s investigation, we identified 68 homes that require reconstruction
    • With the existing funds we have received to date, we were able to reconstruct a total of 17 homes. However, we have a long way to go

Phase 3: Follow up efforts (To begin once Phase 2 has completed)

    • This phase will focus on restoring the livelihoods of affected communities.
    • We expect that there will be a growing need to support local and impoverished communities in other areas of Mandalay

Phase 2: Reconstruction of shelter

  • Our local relief team found that the townships of Maha Aungmye and Chanmyathazi had the most vulnerable and impoverished communities
  • Families of the Maha Aunymye township had not only lost their homes to the earthquake but also to a fire
  • Our analysis of the demographics of the population in these townships identified approximately 78 homes that need to be rebuilt urgently.
    • Maha Aungmye: 61 homes
    • Chanmyathazi: 17 homes

As of 31 August 2025, we have built a total of 30 homes in Maha Aungmye and Chanmyathazi. However, we will require further funding to complete the remaining 48 homes.

  • Schools were destroyed and damaged from the earthquake causing children of Maha Aungmye and Chanmyathazi could not go to school
  • Baan Unrak and our partner on the ground, Green Island pledged to help contribute to school repairs and assist in providing uniforms and school supplies

Thanks to the generous support from GlobalGiving, the impact on the community has been truly transformative:

  • 5 classrooms built, providing children with a safe and supportive space to learn and grow
  • 1 washroom constructed, offering families a clean and reliable place for daily hygiene and water access
  • 15 homes built, giving vulnerable families a secure place to live and rebuild their lives

As Phase 2 continues, we will urgently require additional funding to build the remaining 48 homes for those affected. It costs around USD1,600 to build one home. These two communities will serve as pilot models for future recovery efforts. Your support can make a lasting difference in helping people rebuild their lives with dignity. Every contribution, no matter how small, truly makes a difference. Your kindness becomes bricks, roofs, books, and hope.
