This project will train 30 young people aged 13-19 in Soroti, Uganda, to repair and maintain musical instruments while creating a local service that helps schools, churches, youth groups and musicians keep their instruments in use. The workshop will give young people practical repair skills and hands-on experience while providing affordable basic instrument repair in the community.
Schools, churches, youth groups and musicians in and around Soroti use instruments that need regular maintenance or basic repair, but local repair services are limited. At Temple Talents, children & young people use instruments in our music programme, but we lack the skills or equipment to maintain and repair them. Instead, we seek help from technicians in Kampala, which adds cost and delays. Meanwhile, young people have few opportunities to gain practical technical skills through hands-on work.
Temple Talents will establish an equipped music instrument repair and maintenance workshop at its Centre in Soroti. Thirty young people aged 13-19 will receive hands-on training in diagnosing, maintaining and carrying out basic repairs on instruments and related equipment. The workshop will also provide an affordable local repair service for schools, churches, youth groups and musicians, helping keep instruments in use while giving young people practical skills, experience and exposure.
The workshop will remain at Temple Talents after the project. The 30 young people trained will continue developing their skills, help maintain and repair instruments used in our own music programme, and provide basic repair and maintenance services to schools, churches, youth groups and musicians at a subsidised fee. This will help keep instruments in use while giving the young people continued practical experience and a pathway to paid repair work or independent services.
