Ayesha* was two years and eight months old when she first came to a Mumbai Mobile Creches(MMC) day care centre on a construction site in the suburbs of Mumbai. Her mother had died a few days after Ayesha was born. Her father came to Mumbai in search of better-paying jobs about a year and a half ago and brought his children to a construction site in the city since they would have been alone in Bihar. Ayesha was taken care of by her elder sister when her father would go to work at the site. During a community outreach visit, an MMC teacher explained to her father how beneficial it would be to have his daughters attend the centre, after which he agreed to enrol them.
The MMC teacher noticed that anytime Ayesha ate anything, she would not be able to digest it and suffered from diarrhoea. Her sister mentioned that Ayesha had been suffering from this problem for the past few months. The MMC doctor examined Ayesha and prescribed medication which would help address her digestion-related problems.
She was also nutritionally deficient and was categorised under Moderate Acute Malnourishment (MAM), weighing 12kgs in September 2014, at the age of 4 years 2 months. With the help of medications and the nutritional foods like fruits, vegetables, rice, finger millets, eggs, and milk provided at the centre, Ayesha started showing signs of improvement in terms of digestion, and she demonstrated an increased appetite as well as weight gain. She is now categorised as a normal-weight child, and her family is happy that she no longer suffers from any digestion problems. Ayesha is now very active and playful and loves to interact with other children and solve puzzles, which is one of her favourite activities. We are proud of Ayesha’s progress!
Mumbai Mobile Creches provides holistic care to children living on construction sites and one of our key programmes at the sites is health &nutrition. We work hard to improve the health of the children living on construction sites. To reduce the incidence of malnourishment, we provide them with two nutritious meals and two snacks a day. Our nutrition programme also consists of fruits (four times a week), eggs (everyday) and nutrition supplements at the centres, taking into consideration the recommended caloric, vitamin, and mineral intakes to promote healthy growth and development in children. The doctors make regular visits to the centres to monitor children’s health, tracking their weight and providing them with necessary preventative, curative, or rehabilitative medicines. Additionally, those children identified as malnourished or with specific deficiencies are put on an enriched diet as prescribed by the MMC doctor. Lastly, the centres are regularly cleaned and swept and children are taught important hygiene practices to encourage healthy personal habits. MMC staff members constantly keep an eye out for any medical or health issues that may arise with the children in order to treat them promptly and effectively.
Our health and nutrition programme helps many children like Ayesha to secure a safe, healthy and happy childhood!
