Meet some of our new MS specialist nurses

By Jo Sopala | Director of Development

Dear Friend,

With your help more people with MS have access to an MS specialist nurse…..

With the help of our wonderful friends, including those who have donated via GlobalGiving, we are already making MS lives better in Leicester, Bradford and Lanarkshire. In this report I am updating you on the progress of the project, and letting you know how our new MS specialist nurses are doing. Whilst we are funding one nurse in each area, where other nurses were recruited, we are training and mentoring them too.

At our recent stakeholders meeting with the Leicestershire Team we discussed their progress and on-going needs. Whilst the service as a whole is stretched, the new nurses have made a big difference. There is now a clinic for people with deteriorating symptoms, community and outreach clinics have been set up, and they have identified and contacted people who had been lost to the system. It is all very good news for people with MS in Leicester.

Training is a vital component of component of this project. To provide the excellent care that people with MS deserve, MS specialist nurses must have in-depth knowledge about the condition, the many symptoms people might have to face, and the increasing number of available treatments.  That is why we run our post-graduate residential foundation training course, accredited by Birmingham City University, for all new in post nurses.

The nurses from Leicester attended our November Development Module. In March, Sally from Bradford, and Julie and Claire from Lanarkshire, attended the course and the attached video was filmed. It introduces each of the nurses and lets you know the difference they are making, and how committed they all are to providing the best possible care for people with MS.

We are having very positive talks with six NHS Trust. Whilst things do not move as quickly as we would like, it is vital that these negotiations are conducted as fully and as inclusively as possible. We are confident that we will be able to sign a collaboration agreement with another NHS Trust soon.

Your support is helping us to make MS lives better, and we are so very grateful for your support.

With good wishes from all of us here at the MS Trust.

Yours sincerely,

Jo Sopala

Director of Development.
