Mrs. Najah is ready to resume cooking when conditions allow

Mrs. Najah is eager to cook again, serve community
Mrs. Najah is eager to cook again, serve community

Thanks to your support, since the start of the war, Mrs. Najah’s kitchen, one of our CBO partners in Gaza, has been a lifeline for displaced families, serving thousands of hot, nourishing meals every single day.

Mrs. Najah and her team were displaced from Rafah. When they returned, they found their homes reduced to rubble. Despite this, they relocated and resumed cooking to feed the people. As of May 31st, our community kitchens collectively served 22.5 million meals. When food supplies ran out, we had to close our eight remaining kitchens, including Mrs. Najah’s Kitchen, on May 31st.  They held on as long as they could, feeding the displaced even during bombings. But now, they can't cook anymore because aid is barely coming through.

The need has only grown since then. Thousands of families are living in tents or out in the open. Prices for food, when it is available, have skyrocketed beyond what anyone can afford. Clean water is scarce. Many families haven't had access to a regular meal in weeks.

In one of our recent calls, Mrs. Najah described the situation as ‘miserable'.

I haven’t worked in the kitchen because there is nothing. I feel helpless these days trying to find food. There is no market. The market has some limited supplies. Everything is so expensive because nothing is getting in.

Oil costs $30 for 0.8 liters. A man came to us offering to sell 10 kilograms of flour for $170. If he had taken it to the market, he could have sold it for a higher price.

There are no fruits or vegetables in the market; only lentils, beans, and bulgur are available.

We don’t understand anything anymore. People are hungry. We are exhausted. Everything is gone.”

Today, they have no food to cook. Yet the spirit of the kitchen remains. Mrs. Najah and her team are still there, ready to resume once supplies become available. Their resilience speaks volumes—not just about what they’ve endured, but about what’s possible when communities come together and when supporters like you continue to care.

Thanks to your support, tens of thousands of meals were served during some of Gaza’s darkest days. Although Mrs. Najah’s Kitchen had paused due to a lack of supplies, the team is ready to resume, eager to cook again, rebuild, and care for their communities when conditions allow.
