What a privilege it was to be alongside the young people at the start of their YAT journey and witness, even in that first week, transformation for the better. Even though I always knew the power of adventure to change people, to see it first hand with my group was very special.
I gained so much from volunteering on Mountain Camp - a lot of laughter and happy memories, as well as an insight into the work of YAT and its power to change; nuggets on facing challenge and fears and the different ways we each cope.
It struck me that for some of those youngsters, to have a week of positive energy and encouragement may be quite different to what they normally experience from adults. Given their various difficulties, it’s easy to imagine that their interactions with adults isn't always so positive. Being out of their normal surrounds, meeting new people and challenges provides a perfect space for moving towards a more positive future and sense of themselves.
The next camp for these guys is Coastal Camp and I’ve already signed up to volunteer!
If you can help us again by giving towards this next adventurous instalment in these young people’s youth adventure journey please see our new campaign, Oceans of Opportunity which goes live on #GivingTuesday this week!
