January marked an exciting milestone for MotherSchools Zanzibar: the launch of its sixth generation. Women without Borders (WwB) and local implementing partner ZAYEDESA came together for a kick-off workshop that set the tone for everything to come. The teams reflected on lessons learned from previous iterations, aligned on their shared vision, and mapped out the path forward: identifying the target group, agreeing on mobilisation strategies, and building a realistic project timeline.
What followed was four months of ‘behind the scenes’ work, setting the scene and preparing for the next generation of MotherSchools peacebuilders.
From January through April, WwB and ZAYEDESA worked closely to lay the groundwork for the MotherSchools Roll-out, scheduled to begin in May. This meant direct field work in communities, building trust, and strengthening relationships with the stakeholders who make local change sustainable - from the Ministry of Education and the Second Vice President's Office, to shehas and community leaders across the island. Five implementation locations were identified throughout Zanzibar, each representing a community where mothers will soon gather, learn, and lead.
Behind the scenes, the team was also busy recruiting and mobilising the Teachers and Notetakers who will be the heartbeat of each local MotherSchools group. These women won't just deliver a programme, they'll carry it forward in their own communities. To prepare them, a dedicated Training Workshop is being held at the end of April, equipping them with the skills and confidence to lead.
Adding to the momentum, WwB recently published an impact report from a previous Zanzibar MotherSchools project. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data from Participants, Teachers, and Notetakers alike, the report tells the story of what MotherSchools makes possible, and why this sixth generation matters!
