Baby Meerub

By Rubina Husain and Hareem Khalid Baig | Admin Assistant and Senior Associate Marketing

Meerub, a 19-month-old girl, first came into our clinic with her mother in March 2024. She was severely malnourished with a MUAC (Mid upper arm circumference) of 10.2 cms and a weight of just 8.5kgs. She had an enlarged head and protruding ribs, she struggled to stand, walk, or even sit upright.

After listening to stories of malnourished children who had regained their health after treatment at SHINE Humanity's, Meerub’s mother decided to visit our Koohi Goth Clinic. While talking with our health team, her mother complained of Meerub having no appetite and being very picky with her food. As the youngest in her family and in very poor health her family was very concerned for her well-being, especially as none of the older sibling were malnorished.

The nutritionist at SHINE Humanity's Clinic provided Meerub with a personalized diet, extensive counseling, and treatment with RUTF; (Ready to use theraputic food) which is an energy dense micronutrient paste especially formulated to help treat malnutrition. They are safe and easy to use straight from the packet and are easy for children to digest.

Over the course of the next 19 bi-weekly visits (9 months), she slowly progressed to 11.8 MUAC and 9.8 kgs weight. She now has a good appetite, can sit, walk, even run and play with her siblings. With continued care and personalized counseling, Meerub will soon be the same weight and height as of her fellow children.

We are so thankful to our donors whose generosity have allowed SHINE Humanity to continue its mission of providing healthcare to underserved communities.
