By Lisa Saint Aubin de Teran | Project Leader
Dear Donors, Teran Foundation is pleased to share the progress we have been able to make so far thanks to your generous support for Mossuril’s first pre-school.
Since receiving your donations we have been acting on four fronts
1) Fatima and Angela, two leading ladies in the SHINE Association here will be the Head and Assistant teachers respectively. To do this they have to receive pre-school teacher training.
A generous offer which arose out of the GlobalGiving Campaign for teacher-training in Maputo is, alas not possible at the moment because the fares to Maputo (2800 km away) and accommodation there would swallow up too much of our budget. However, we are very grateful for the interest and the offer.
Instead, Fatima and Angela will travel with me (Lisa) to Nampula City (180km away from Mossuril) and receive training from the Mozambican Ministry of Education’s Pre-School training project. The District Director of Education for Mossuril has kindly helped with their enlistment in the programme early next year. Travel and staying costs for the trainees will be paid from the GG crowdfunding.
2) An extensive (and obligatory) set of architectural plans have been paid for and drawn up by a surveyor together with a detailed project description and this has been submitted to the local District Government for authorization.
Although it is just a formality, we need approval from the District Office of Infrastructure, The District Office of Planning & Economic Affairs, The District Administrator, Women and Social Action, Education, and Culture as well as from GACIM (on Mozambique Island) before we can start any building.
A project guard, Bernardo, has also been hired.
So far, there have been 4 trips to Nampula and 2 trips to Mozambique Island to help untangle some of the red tape.on this project.
Nequeias, the Assistant Project Manager has been helping daily to follow up all of these permits and we hope to have them all by the end of 2018.
3) While we wait for the authorization permits to be ready. We have bought some of the building materials needed for the restoration of the pre-school’s 2 rooms.
These include 22 sacks of cement, 15 sacks of lime, and 4 tons of sand. We also have a local stone mason and two assistant masons standing by to start the work.
4) Also while we wait for District Government Permits to begin the restoration work, we have started to enroll the first group of 54 local children with a card for each child with their parents’ names, and all relevant details including a short medical history and an emergency contact number for each future pupil.
We have also bought extra early-learning toys and equipment for the pre-school
In February, 3 international volunteers will come and help with the project
In order to speed up the bureaucratic process, I have asked the Office of The Provincial Governor of Nampula for help to ensure that we can get this project off the ground with a minimum of delays. And I have been assured that this is a project dear to the heart not only of the Provincial Governor but also President Nyusi himself.
So 2019 will be an exciting New Year for Mossuril.
5) Last, but not least, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped make this happen and Nequinho, Fatima, Angela, 54 children and their parents and extended families and all of us at Teran Foundation wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
