On September 8, 2023, an earthquake in Morocco left thousands injured and deceased in five provinces of the Atlas Mountains. The High Atlas Foundation, already working in that region, immediately launched with its partners a dynamic, multidimensional earthquake relief and recovery program to help the affected communities. Today, support is still needed for psychosocial healing and rebuilding. Donate now to earthquake relief, recovery, and rebuilding!
Tremors from the Atlas Mountain earthquake caused severe damage to homes and infrastructure, wells, terraces, and roads. In some cases, entire villages were leveled and left without access to water, food, or medical care. Communities grieved an immense, tragic loss of life, and faced the destruction of years of work toward social, environmental, and financial well-being. Initial donations and support made a difference, but communities still need resources for post-earthquake reconstruction.
Within the first ten days after the earthquake, donations to this charity allowed HAF to procure, transport, and distribute food, water, sanitation kits, blankets, clothing, shelters, solar energy kits, cook stoves, and trauma triage. We reached nearly 15,000 families. Our strategy now requires a transition from short-term aid to resumption of long-term partnerships for rebuilding infrastructure, building water systems, and aiding recovery for sustainability and resilience.
Moroccans' resilient spirit has transformed trauma into hope as earthquake victims articulate their deep-seated hopes and visions into action plans for community rebuilding. HAF is working with communities to reconstruct homes, repair roads, and reestablish water and agricultural infrastructure, and will continue to advance women's well-being through mental health care, access to legal aid, and literacy programs.
