he Atlas Digibus program continues to transform learning opportunities for children in Langa, Cape Town. This quarter, the program provided holistic support through literacy, digital literacy, and personalised psychosocial interventions. With an emphasis on Grade 4 and 5 learners, the Digibus addressed critical challenges in transitioning from learning in the mother tongue to mastering English for academic success.
The quarter was capped by a momentous visit from His Royal Highness Prince William, who engaged with the children and staff, underscoring the program's impact on empowering underserved communities.
Program Achievements1. Literacy Progress through Reading Eggs
The Digibus curriculum's focus on foundational literacy showed significant improvements:
2. Digital Literacy with Code4 Kidz
The program introduced learners to essential coding skills:
3. Psychosocial Support
The Digibus’ newly appointed social worker initiated tailored interventions for children with learning and social challenges. This included:
4. Prince William's visit to the Atlas Digibus as part of his Earthshot mission provided an extraordinary opportunity for the children to showcase their achievements. During the visit, the learners proudly demonstrated their progress in the maths program, with one student receiving direct assistance from the Prince to solve a particularly challenging problem. Following the visit, the EArth shot competition became a platform for a meaningful discussions around environmental awareness. The children have engaged with VUSA staff on topics related to sustainability, reflecting the program's emphasis on integrating global issues into education.
HRH Prince William's encouragement and hands-on involvement left a lasting impression on the children, inspiring the learners to see their potential as change-makers for both their communities and the planet.
Challenges: The Need for a Sustainable Solution
While the Atlas Digibus continues to make a significant impact, its mechanical challenges pose growing concerns. As an older vehicle, frequent breakdowns have disrupted the program schedule, affecting the consistency of learning opportunities for the children. Repairs often mean days lost where the bus cannot reach the schools, creating gaps in the curriculum and reducing the program's ability to maintain momentum with learners.
Additionally, the increasing repair costs are beginning to strain the budget, diverting vital funding from other essential programs. While we are committed to ensuring this transformative initiative continues uninterrupted, the current situation highlights the need to start planning and saving for a new, more reliable Digibus. Investing in a new vehicle would secure the sustainability of this critical program and allow us to continue providing uninterrupted education and inspiration to the children we serve. We have costed a new bus fully kitted out would cost $278 650 and over a 10 year period would cost $5 per learner per month for English, Coding and Maths support.
Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support of this programme. Wishing you and your families a safe and blessed holiday period.
Kind regards
Nikki and the VUSA Team
