Atlas Digibus is a mobile classroom that has been supporting Grade 4 pupils in 5 Langa schools with their transition from mother tongue to English and after its pilot in 2022, demonstrated a massive impact across all 5 schools (a minimum of 20% improvement at all schools) . The programme aims to improve literacy skills and language proficiency among students, particularly those for whom English is a second language.
As part of the programme, Atlas Digibus introduced Reading Eggs as a tool for the English as a Second Language (ESL) programme. Reading Eggs is an interactive online programme that uses games and activities to improve reading and language skills. The Grade 4 students were able to use Reading Eggs to improve their English vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. The programme has been well received by the students and helps them to develop a love for reading and learning.
After completing the ESL programme, the Grade 5 students resumed their Digibus experience with an introduction to coding. The programme used for this was Code for Kids, which aims to introduce children to coding in a fun and interactive way. The students were excited to continue coming on the Digibus, and the coding programme was a good follow-on from last year's ESL programme. It allowed them to further develop their language and problem-solving skills, as well as their creativity and critical thinking.
Overall, Atlas Digibus has been a successful initiative in supporting the education of Grade 4 and 5 students in Langa schools. The combination of Reading Eggs for the ESL programme and Code for Kids for the coding programme has provided an engaging and effective learning experience for the students, and has helped to improve their academic outcomes, digital literacy skills and enthusiasm for learning.
